On 13th of October 2023 the Maritzburg College Old Boys’ Association held the annual Induction ceremony during which outgoing 6th form boys are welcomed into the MCOBA and they receive their Old Boy tie. It is an auspicious occasion and truly a rite of passage.
The event was well attended by boys (98% of the year group) and parents, as well as a strong contingent of Honorary Life Members, Past Presidents, MCOBA Exec and Old Boys as well as the Patron, Mr. Chris Luman. Our Master of Ceremonies, Immediate Past President, Mr Grant Little (OC, 1985), kept the formalities running smoothly throughout.
The President of the MCOBA, Mr Andrew Clayton (OC, 1991) welcomed the Class of 2022 and spoke about what it means to join the brotherhood. The opportunities to connect with fellow Old Boys, to forge connections, to work with mentors and to belong. Read Andrew’s full speech HERE.
Chairman of the Board and OC of the Class of 1985, Mr Craig MacKenzie, lit the Candle of Remembrance, a traditional part of the Induction ceremony which honours the lives of the mighty fallen who left us during the year.
The boys received their Old Boys tie – the moment of their formal Induction into the MCOBA. Some of the ties were handed out by President and others by a close OC relative of the inductee, but all ties were sponsored. The name and year of the OC who sponsored the tie is printed on the back. The boys are encouraged to get in touch with the OC to say thanks and to forge a connection – it is a start to building relationships with men who share the great common experience of attending Maritzburg College. This was an incredible effort from the Old Boys which contributed greatly to how meaningful the night was for the guests. After emotive words from 2018 Head Prefect Ntuthuko Mchunu known by the 6th formers as the mighty Zeus, and Valedictorian Zibusiso Shongwe, the procession was led by the piper as always to the Wall of Remembrance for one final shout. After lots of tears, pictures, and spicy curries on Forder Oval, the night was done. The next generation of MCOBA members has been inducted!
The outgoing boys are moving on to a different phase in their College experience – and the MCOBA and College wish them all the best of luck. Old Boys are always available to provide guidance and support!
