After matriculating from Maritzburg College in 2021, Matt moved to England and joined Harpenden Rugby Club, competing at a semi-professional level. His strong performances soon earned him selection for Hertfordshire County, where he competed in the English County Championships.
This past season was his best yet. Matt played 32 games, scored an impressive 28 tries, and finished as the top try scorer in the county competition. The Hertfordshire side went undefeated throughout the tournament and capped their campaign with a memorable victory in the final at Twickenham, a proud and unforgettable moment for the whole team.

Matt’s rugby journey began at Maritzburg College, where he started playing in 3rd Form for the U15G side and later progressed to the 2nd XV. As a boarder from 2nd Form through to 6th Form, College played a key role in shaping his discipline, character, and passion for the game. Even now, while playing in the UK, he still proudly wears black boots, a small but meaningful tribute to his College roots.

Matt initially moved to the UK to attend university and study Sports Science. After realising that university wasn’t the right path for him, he decided to stay abroad rather than return to South Africa. He embraced the challenge of building his independence at just 18, gaining life experience on the other side of the world!
Today, Matt works as a landscaper while continuing to thrive on the rugby field, carving out his own journey with determination and pride.
