Talent, Grit & Character

Back in our college days, Craig Joubert, a member of the Class of 1995, was already making waves as one of rugby’s finest referees worldwide.

Our connection traces back to our youthful escapades, darting across the field in touch rugby tournaments. Craig, fondly dubbed “Jouba” by his teammates and me, and I earned the moniker “Bullet” for my alleged lightning speed. In 1995, amidst the somber clouds of his father’s passing, Craig displayed unmatched resilience and commitment by officiating the under 16A match between Maritzburg College and Hilton College at Goldstones.

Despite grappling with personal turmoil, he orchestrated a flawless performance, drawing a standing ovation from the entire crowd post-match. His grace under pressure and unwavering professionalism at such a tender age left an indelible mark on all who witnessed it. Our bond transcends the rugby pitch, weaving through the tapestry of our lives.

Craig remains a cherished companion, a testament to our enduring friendship. From those carefree touch rugby days to his ascent as one of the globe’s premier referees, Craig’s journey epitomises talent, grit, and character. It’s an honor to have shared this journey with him.

Brett Fourie, Class of 1985.
