Obituary: David Smith – Class of 1975

(13 June 1958 – 28 January 2025)

The Old Boys’ Association was very sorry to learn recently of the death of David Smith, of the 6A class of 1975. A member of one of College’s mightiest clans, the Lindsay Smiths (Dave’s father Des had been head prefect of College in 1947), Dave was a colourful and passionate OC, whose memorial service was most appropriately held in the Memorial Chapel on Friday, 7 February.

It was well attended by family, friends and former classmates. Warm but unvarnished tributes were paid by Dave’s son Rory, as well as former classmates Martin Hellberg and Peter Rodseth and brother Anton (1977). Thereafter, refreshments and snacks were served in the Olivier Cultural Centre – after which more adventurous souls ventured up the hill to ‘Crossways’, for an appropriate send-off to a much-loved Old Collegian.
